The South East Celebrates its Greatest Sausages

5th November, 2014Today, the best traditional and best innovative sausages in the South East were crowned in British Sausage Week’s week celebration of the Great British Banger.

Oliver Weaver from Patrick Strainge Butchers won a Banger Award in the Innovative category for his Blood, Sweat and Tears (breakfast) Sausage. British Sausage Week’s celebrity ambassador Phil

Vickery, former England rugby captain and Celebrity Masterchef 2011 winner, was on hand to preside over the awards after a fierce cook off event in Reading at The Bel & The Dragon, on Gas Works Road.

Of the innovative sausage, he added, “It was a good combination of flavours and textures. The whole sausage was well put together, with the textures and spices subtly working together and complimenting each other”.

Innovative category winner, Oliver Weaver, added, “The sausage was inspired by the Rugby World Cup. The black pudding represents the blood, the onions represent the sweat and the salt in the sausage was the tears, all combined together with locally produced pork. It’s performed really well in the shop. I’m only 20 so it’s the first time I’ve entered the competition.”

British Sausage Week, now in its incredible 17th year, will run from 3rd-9th November.  The annual celebration aims to raise awareness of the great variety, quality and all round tastiness of British sausages.
